Career Brief

Professor Wynn graduated with BRurSc from the University of New England (UNE), before completing DipED and MRurSc, also at UNE. He then undertook PhD studies through University of Sydney, investigating the role of growth hormone in the control of wool growth in Merino sheep.

On completion of his postgraduate requirements Professor Wynn was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship with the Australian Wool Corporation before taking up a position as Visiting Associate in the Endocrinology and Reproduction Research Branch of the National Institutes of Health, Maryland, USA.

Professor Wynn subsequently joined the CSIRO Division of Animal Production as a Research Scientist in 1997, where he explored the endocrine regulation of wool fibre shedding and the development of a method for wool harvesting. At the same time he investigated immunological ways of manipulating hormones involved in nutrient partitioning to promote growth and decrease carcass fatness is meat sheep.

Professor Wynn was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science at University of Sydney, and then Associate Professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, where he was involved in teaching coordination and research. During this time he undertook studies exploring the role of stress hormones in controlling wool growth as well as endocrine studies of lactation in pigs and sheep. This latter work lead to Professor Wynn having a major role in the CRC for Innovative Dairy products, linking gene expression patterns with the productivity of dairy sheep and cows.

In recent times Professor Wynn has been involved in research projects in the Pork CRC exploring ways of manipulating dietary fats and hormones to program superior growth patterns in growing pigs. He currently also leads an ACIAR-funded Australian team to provide dairy extension expertise to the Pakistani dairy industry.

Professor Wynn joined the staff of Charles Sturt University in 2008 where he will continue his research and coordinate the course 'An introduction to Animal Science'.
