Allelopathy in Canola

Summary

The proposed plan is to explore allelopathy in canola (Brassica napus) for its role in achieving high yields and effective weed control in that crop in Australia. Allelopathy is a process whereby plants provide themselves with a competitive advantage by releasing compounds into the adjacent environment. This has been shown to contribute to the competitive ability of rice cultivars and wheat genotypes. Allelopathy in canola is likely, given its reputation for soil biofumigation and its weak association with mycorhizae.

This research program is focused on identifying superior canola genotypes against its biotic stress, the identification and quantification of the allelopathic compounds involved and the associated gene expression in response to challenges by weeds. Development of a strategy based on allelopathy will help to reduce the dependence on herbicides and thus be an additional tool for integrated weeds management.
