Growing Mungbean (Vigna radiata) in post-rice soil
Summary
Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) is a grain legume of immense importance. Due to its short growth duration, mungbean is fitted well in rice based cropping systems. After rice harvest, the soil profile remains moist for a considerable period. As a result, intermittent saturation of the soil and shallow water table delays land preparation. Such adverse soil condition results in sub-optimal plant population. On the other hand, because of wet-puddling for the preceding rice crop, the soils become structurally degraded and are prone to be saturated quickly. As a result, the plant growth is adversely affected which is attributed to inadequate oxygen supply to sustain root respiration. The causes of low yields of upland crops after rice are mainly poor crop establishment and poor root growth due to soil physical constraints. As a result of these low yields, farmers are reluctant to invest in post-rice crops. Therefore, land after lowland rice represents an underutilized resource that can be used to meet the food requirement of the ever increasing population of the developing world. This probably requires cultivars that can withstand under adverse soil physical condition created due to puddling. Therefore evaluation of genotypic responses under such situation is time demanding.
