Factors influencing smallholder cocoa production: Farmers’ livelihood and decision-making in technology adoption in Papua New Guinea
Summary
Despite the importance of cocoa and the availability of improved management technology there has been poor transfer and uptake of these technologies and cocoa production remains low in PNG. The reasons for this poor adoption were tailored to ineffective extension services, labour shortage, lack of knowledge, and diversify of livelihood. However the ultimate decision to adopt a particular technology depends to a great extent on the farmers perceptions about the technology, livelihood, their socio-cultural and economic situation and their need for the technology. Hence, there is limited information about the pattern of farmers decision-making in adopting and applying of cocoa technology. Without a proper understanding of why farmers’ do what they do at a given point of time, it will be impossible to contribute to change effectively. Therefore the project aims to investigate the factors that influence the farmers’ livelihood and decision-making of technology adoption and application in cocoa production.
