Investigating the Role of Vitamin D during Osteogenic Differentiation in Poultry.
Summary
Normal bone growth, particularly of the weight bearing long bones is critical for good health and well being in both layer and broiler flocks. Leg disorders in broilers are important welfare and economic issues for the poultry industry. Enhancing the bone growth in these systems has long been a goal of the Industry to prevent early loss of birds due to bone breakages in the juvenile and young adults.
The proposed project will investigate the role of Vitamin D on bone cell growth and differentiation (Osteoblastogenesis & Osteroclasotgeneis) from the embryonic stage using mesenchymal stem cell and chick embryos.
The project will assist poultry producers and major companies in understanding the role of Vitamin D in leg disorders in day old chicks and making informed decisions. Also, this will improve the productivity and welfare standards for broiler chickens in commercial operations.
