Recombinant proteins of beak and feather disease virus

Summary

Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is the most common viral disease of psittacine birds worldwide. It is an immunosuppressive disease that threatens many Australian birds. The disease can also have chronic symptoms such as symmetrical feather loss, and beak and claw deformities. The causative agent is beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a small virus with a genome consisting of circular ssDNA about 2000 bp in length. This genome only encodes two major proteins, a highly variable capsid protein and a conserved replication protein. My research uses a bacterial system to produce recombinant BFDV proteins. Once isolated, these recombinant proteins are used in a number of different ways, including diagnostics, vaccine trials, and generating structural data.
