Project
Development of Village-based forage seed production system for the sustainability of smallholder farmers of Pakistan
Summary
Small farmers are often not absorbing crop production technologies and their genetic potentials. The market-oriented forage seed production offer opportunities, as they could significantly increase forage & livestock productivity and thus improve their livelihoods. Therefore, new technologies need to be introduced to allow farmers to build capacity, increase productivity, and produce quality seed for marketing.
The objective of the project is to develop, test and demonstrate a model of informal forage seed production system which identifies the weak links of seed production. Additionally, it aims to organize farmer-managed seed supply, to provide high-quality seed and develop skills that will lead to a sustainable and profitable farmer-based seed enterprise.
Outcomes of the project would be the timely availability of good quality forage seed, the increase in forage productivity and establishing a small-scale business enterprises. These benefits would be multiplied when combined with added livestock benefits because of sufficient fodder availability.
