Project

Identification and characterisation of necrosis and chlorosis inducing substances produced by Mycosphaerella graminicola

Summary

The mechanisms of pathogenicity of Mycosphaerella graminicola are still poorly understood. Throughout the world M. graminicola inflicts significant wheat yield losses (septoria tritici blotch) with rapid development of resistance to fungicides.

Previous work and current models suggest small secreted proteins (effectors) produced by M. graminicola, thought to interact with plant receptors, subsequently triggering cell death and thus crop damage.

This research project seeks to identify and characterise these effectors and their genes. Confirmed effector genes will be then produced and undergo detailed characterisation. The latter also in respect to natural resistance of wheat that reduces the impact of the pathogen.
