Project
Assessment and alleviation of adverse stimuli in pigs
Summary
Unmitigated pain is associated with suffering, distress and detrimental effects in physical health, representing a welfare concern. Pain management in animals is limited by pain assessment, which remains highly subjective, with producers and veterinarians relying on indirect measures of pain – usually based on clinical and behavioural parameters.
Over the last two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the literature relating to the
mechanisms and management of pain in domestic animals. However, these findings have not found their way to consistent on-farm adoption by producers and/or veterinarians. The proposed project seeks to improve pig health and welfare management, focusing on “best practice” detection and management of adverse stimuli (disease, injury, heat stress) in-line with current community expectations.
