Professor Kath Bowmer holds a joint part­time appointment with CSU and CSIRO as Professor of Water Policy and Honorary Research Fellow respectively. She has degrees in agricultural sciences and soil chemistry and has published widely in irrigation science, water quality and aquatic plant ecology and management. Her more recent roles include chair of the Murrumbidgee River Management Committee, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Charles Sturt University (1996 to 2001), chair of the Australian Research Council Earth Sciences Panel (1998 to 2000), and Business Director of CSIRO Land and Water (2001 to 2004). Kath is also a Director of State Water Corporation and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

In 2003 and 2004 Kath represented CSIRO in a national review of science underpinning catchment management that was commissioned by the Natural Resources Management Ministerial Council.

She is a member of the Science and Information Board of NSW DIPNR which is charged with producing a knowledge strategy ­ a framework for investment in knowledge to support policy decisions and the needs of key clients including, in particular, the Catchment Management Authorities in NSW.

Kath edited the book Water Innovation, A New Era for Australia (2004), co­authoring chapters on 'Managing Australia's Water for the Future', 'Sustainable Irrigation' and ' Healthy Rivers and Catchments.' Over 800 copies of the book were distributed to regional and catchment management authorities by the lead sponsor, the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Kath was a keynote speaker at the 2003 International Hydrology and Water Resource Symposium held in Wollongong , and invited speaker at the recent ANU Europe Centre international conference on Sustainable Water Management. She has refereed papers for many Universities and has examined theses for ten universities.

In 1995 Kath was awarded the Pol Eureka Prize for Environmental Research.
