After Ian completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in botany and geography at the University of Melbourne in 1983, he worked for the Victorian government conservation department doing vegetation surveys. In 1986 he did an honours degree at La Trobe University on grassland ecology before returning to the work force, to survey native vegetation and write conservation strategies. He then returned to university to complete a PhD on the effects of management history on native grasslands and woodlands. After brief stints as a threatened species planner and a botanical consultant Ian moved to CSU in Albury as a postdoctoral fellow in 1997. In 1999 he was appointed a senior lecturer in vegetation ecology at CSU .

Ian is a dedicated ecological researcher, having written over 50 refereed scientific articles plus a popular grassland field guide, Plains Wandering: Exploring the Grassy Plains of Southeast Australia , and numerous extension articles. His research focuses on the conservation biology of remnant ecosystems, especially endangered native grasslands and woodlands. It attempts to:

Thus, individual research projects focus on historical ecology, ecological effects of fire and grazing, restoration techniques, and related issues. In addition to these research interests, Ian provides expert advice to many government committees in Victoria and New South Wales .
