Human Dimensions of Environmental Management

The HDEM group conducts social and cultural research to assist sustainable environmental management in the Australasia Pacific region. Researchers undertake quality research that enhances understanding of community dynamics and human relationships with the environment. Information generated by the group informs policy, planning and management with government, community and industry partners.

Research Strengths

The Human Dimensions group has expertise in the following areas:

Sustainable Tourism and Recreation ­studies in recreation, lifestyle and visitor experience; interpretation and guiding; ecotourism and community development

Natural Resource Management ­ social dimensions of water, land and vegetation management and policies incuding biodiversity conservation; environmental stewardship, triple bottom line reporting; adaptive management, Government and community partnerships; regional governance and participatory methods

Cultural Heritage ­ Indigenous and management and co-management; heritage futures; disaster management; itinerancy and migration; historic preservation in Australia and Oceania; and cultural values

Community Development ­ sense of place; land use changes; rural livelihoods; environmental education

There are 41 members of the ERD group including 11 academic staff, 4 adjuncts, 2 research fellows, 13 doctoral and 2 Masters students.
