This project is an extension of the Our Place – Riverina and Murray project conducted in Holbrook, Albury and Deniliquin and completed in 2014. Project details.
The project aims to research and support community engagement in the promotion of sustainable living and protection of the natural environment by residents. The project involves community forums, surveys and funding for small practical projects identified by community members.
In late 2015, the project team ran an initial public forum and then a community workshop to co-design a local survey of residents' sustainability practices, knowledge, values and interests. Residents were then invited to take part in a mini participatory budgeting process, wherein they determined how $5000 was to be spent on community projects, informed by the survey results. The process entailed numerous meeting between March and May 2016.
The process culminated in the Corowa Shire Council, Corowa Business Chamber, Corowa Community Hub and Friends of Sanger Street Inc. being awarded $5000 to run an "Our Place" Expo in January 2017. The week-long Expo will promote opportunities for residents and visitors to contribute to securing an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable future for the Corowa community.
The project will deliver practical new resources to assist communities to protect their natural environment and live sustainably.
