Veronica Madigan is a Senior Lecturer in Pre Hospital Care Emergency Medicine and Program Leader in the School of Biomedical Sciences. Veronica is involved in both the undergraduate and post graduate programs of the Discipline. Her professional background includes 13 years with the Ambulance Service of New South Wales as an Acting District Officer / Paramedic Station Officer / Intensive Care Paramedic in the Illawarra and Sydney Regions.
Her academic interests lie in emergency medicine, the education of paramedic officers particularly in the rural and remote regions of Australia, pre-hospital research and veterinary medicine. Veronica's Master of Rural Health thesis, with the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University was entitled, 'Predicting pre-hospital care students' first year academic performance at a rural university'. Currently she is in her final year of her PhD with Charles Sturt University examining 'What are the lessons that human medicine can learn from veterinary medicine with regard to patient non verbal communication and clinical assessment?'
Teaching
Veronica has a passion for teaching Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine and enjoys assisting her students link theory with practice. Veronica teaches both undergraduate and post graduate students in the Pre Hospital Care Discipline. The subjects in the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) and Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) courses include:
- CLS 202 Clinical Studies 3
- CLS 300 Clinical Studies 4
- CLS 302 Internship 2
Subjects in the Post Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Studies include the double subject PHC 402 Pre Hospital Advanced Trauma and Cardiac Care.
Veronica was awarded Charles Sturt University's Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence in 2010 for her dedication to teaching. Veronica also received a nomination for the Vice Chancellor's Professional Excellence Award in 2009 for teamwork involving the clinical placement of students in both the Pre Hospital and Hospital environment.
Research
Veronica's research interests are varied. They include:
- Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine
- The overlap between human and veterinary medicine
- How non-verbal communication assists health care practitioner practice
- Problem Based Learning for internal and Distance Education students
- Learning to be a clinical detective
Current research projects
Fast track: evidence-based strategies for paramedic internships. EFPI (Education for Practice Institute) Seed grant ($7,840) Lazarsfeld-Jensen, A. with O'Meara, P., Madigan, V., Daley V.
This project aims to evaluate current paramedic internships against optimal learning conditions, and consider alternative, innovative and supplementary strategies. It aims to begin making significant contributions to internship education of paramedics through publications including a proposed text, as none currently exists for the discipline.
