Members are now part of two discipline groups within the Institute: the ecology and biodiversity group and the human dimensions of environmental management group.

The Institute was established at the beginning of 2005 and its mission is to be an internationally recognised provider of integrated research that is contributing to enhanced social and environmental sustainability in rural and regional areas.

ILWS is a substantial research group with internationally recognised expertise in economics, social science, ecology and water systems.

ILWS has strong external partners including CSIRO and a world class Advisory Board chaired by Dr Denis Saunders that includes Ken Matthews (CEO National Water Initiative), Dr Wendy Craik (CEO MDBC), Victoria Keighery (CEO Regional Arts NSW) and Cathy McGowan.

Research at the former Johnstone Centre was carried out in three theme areas with individual projects spanning the theme boundaries of:

  • Ecological processes and biodiversity conservation
  • Social dimensions of sustainable development
  • Environmental informatics
