On Wednesday 29 October 2007 the NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald, named Wagga wine industry leader and renowned researcher Professor Geoffrey Scollary winner of this year’s Graham Gregory trophy.
Professor Scollary, who was Director of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre for 10 years, received the prestigious industry honour during the NSW Wine Awards.
Minister Macdonald had this to say about Professor Scollary:
"His contribution to the recognition of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre has been enormous, and has exceeded the call of his profession."
"Professor Scollary played an important role in the development of the Winegrowing Futures program, the culmination of two year of negotiations by centre partners, DPI, CSU and the NSW Wine Industry Association with the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation."
"Last year, he completed a five-year, $30million co-investment research and extension program between partner of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre and the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation.
"In 1997, he also became Professor of Oneology with Charles Sturt University, a role he continues to fulfil today.
"He plays a lead role in managing the relationship between CSU, DPI and the NSW Wine Industry Association, and has overseen the efforts of research and extension staff, as well as PhD students at the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre."
"Professor Scollary regularly liaises with wine industry members at national, state and regional levels, and has participated in international research initiatives, as well as development priority setting and project planning for the industry."
The trophy is named after former NSW Agriculture Deputy Director-General, Graham Gregory, who helped pioneer the NSW wine industry.
