Grants
Service Skills Australia Grant
Congratulations to Ros Brennan Kemmis, for the success of a proposal to Service Skills Australia to research: 'New deal: Workforce development for service industries VET practitioners'. Ros will be working with Erica Smith (who will project manage the research) and Warren Payne from the University of Ballarat, and Lauri Grace from Deakin University. The research project will provide a picture of the VET workforce that works both with and within the service industries, and also suggest a national workforce development strategy and evaluation process.
Australian Learning and Teaching Council Competitive Grant
Congratulations to the consortium from the University of Western Sydney and Charles Sturt University, who received funding from the ALTC for their research project 'Enhancing the student experience: Transition from vocational education and training to higher education'. The project will target on-campus VET students, and will look at transitions from the VET sector to university. Ros Brennan Kemmis is a Key Project Member of the team.
Charles Sturt University Competitive Grants

Empirical Projects
A number of empirical projects involving international partnerships between researchers are underway. At present they include the following participants :

- 'Nurturing Praxis: Continuing action research among pre-school teachers': Karin Rönnerman (University of Gothenburg), received 130 000 SEK (~€13,350) from the National Agency for Education
- 'Do schools need research?': Karin Rönnerman, Elisabeth Hesslefors Arktoft, Lennart Svensson, Anna Brodin (University of Gothenburg) received 120 000 SEK (~€12,325) from the University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Teacher Education.
- This group is also working towards development of an international collaborative project (Ian Hardy, Karin Rönnerman and Eli Furu are leading).
- Ian Hardy has a related research project on professional development in Canada nearing completion.

- 'Multilingual learning and identity in the everyday lives of Finnish children' – MULIE: Associate Prof. Fritjof Sahlström (Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, Helsinki University), in collaboration with PhD Liselott Forsman, PhD Michaela Pörn and EdD Anna Slotte-Lüttge (Åbo Akademi University), funded by the Academy of Finland, 2008-2011.
- Inclusive and exclusive practices in education: Petra Ponte & Nicolien Montessori (coordinators, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences), Ann Ahlberg (University of Gothenburg), Matts Mattson and Birgitta Salin (Stockholm University), Brian Hemmings and Jason Cummings (Charles Sturt University). This project is progress.
- An Overarching Empirical Project: An overarching research program description 'Praxis Development throughout the Teaching Career' has been prepared, and is being used by researchers in the international collaboration as an orienting document for the program.

Completed Activities
Conferences at which findings of the international collaborative program were presented:
- European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) Annual Conference: September 10th to 12th, 2008, Gothenburg, Sweden: a symposium where the four books in the PEP series were presented attracted more than 100 attendees. The books were first presented and then discussed in the four groups. An open discussion, chaired by Wilfred Carr, completed the symposium, with many interesting tasks to discuss. PEP members presented their own papers at different sessions and in several networks during the conference.
- Pedagogy, Culture and Society journal: Special Conference on “Researching Praxis”, September 13th, 2008, Gothenburg, Sweden. Keynote given by Stephen Kemmis.
- Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN) Annual Conference: Liverpool, United Kingdom, Nov 7th to 9th, 2008. Petra Ponte paper: 'Action research and pedagogy as human science'.
