UNIVERSITY RESEARCH CENTRE (URC) SCHOLARSHIPS – Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation (GC)

Annually up to two (2) University Research Centre (URC) Scholarships are awarded per URC to applicants whose research area is relevant to the key research objectives of a CSU URC.

Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation (GC)

The Graham Centre provides multi-disciplinary and integrated research in key areas, to create knowledge and capacity to deliver farming systems for the future. The Centre’s activities are focussed around three key areas:

  • Plant systems (crops and pastures)
  • Livestock systems (sheep and beef focus)
  • Grain and meat quality

Eligible applicants must be studying on a full-time basis towards a Research Doctorate degree. URC - GC scholarships are available to applicants intending to commence in 2017 in a Higher Degree by Research program.


  • University Research Centre scholarships are only available to Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.
  • An applicant’s proposed research is to be aligned with the key objectives of the University Research Centre.
  • Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, at least a Bachelor degree with upper second class honours or a qualification deemed equivalent.
  • Will commence a Research Doctorate in 2017.
  • Are enrolling as a full-time student or, in exceptional circumstances, be granted approval by CSU for a part-time award in line with the further award criteria.
  • Have had their enrolment into the proposed Higher Degree by Research program accepted by CSU.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • Are receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or salary from the Australian Government or its statutory authorities;
  • Have already completed a degree at the same, or higher, level;
  • Have previously had more than 6 months of a Commonwealth–funded postgraduate research scholarship.

The University will rank applicants by academic merit. The applicant’s place in the order of merit will not be affected by age, or having applied to another institution.


A University Research Centre Scholarship is NOT transferable to another university.

Award value

Stipend: Currently $31,288 per annum (2016 rate) and at present considered tax exempt.
NB: This includes a supplementary top-up amount of $5,000 per annum which is awarded to the successful applicant at the discretion of the Centre Director.

Relocation Allowance:  Maximum payable AUD $5,000.00. Scholarship recipients may be eligible for a relocation allowance in addition to the annual stipend for the cost of relocating themselves, their spouse and dependants to a new place of residence where this is necessary to enable the student to undertake the Research Doctorate.

Thesis Allowance: Maximum payable AUD $840.00. Can be claimed after submission of thesis on production of receipts for both the soft and hard bound thesis. Claims must be made within twelve (12) months of submission of the thesis and no longer than twenty four (24) months after the expiry or termination of the scholarship.

Tuition Fees: Domestic URC - GC recipients are exempt from fee liability under the Research Training Scheme (RTS) for a maximum of 4 years full time equivalent for a Research Doctorate.

Operating Funds: Scholarship recipients are allocated an allowance per session of enrolment to assist with the reimbursement of costs associated with conducting their research studies.

Award Duration

The award is normally for three (3) years for Research Doctorate. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to commencement, will be deducted from the period of tenure.

An extension of up to six (6) months may be granted for Research Doctorate candidates where the University is satisfied that the extension is based on grounds which are beyond the control of the candidate and related to their research rather than of a personal nature. However, the supplementary component of this scholarship is not applicable for extension.

Scholarship recipients are entitled to twenty (20) days paid recreation leave per year calculated on a pro-rata basis. Students are also entitled to up to ten (10) days paid sick leave per year and may be eligible for up to twelve (12) weeks paid maternity leave within the tenure of the award.
