The Rotary Murray-Darling School
of Freshwater Research is a project of the Rotary Club of Albury in
co-operation with the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre, Charles
Sturt University and La Trobe University.
The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre at Thurgoona, NSW is the focus
for pure research into freshwater issues such as blue-green algae, the
effects of river regulation and the role of billabongs and wetlands in
floodplain ecology. It is (through being a part of CSIRO), a major partner
in the Cooperative Research Centre for Freshwater Ecology and has satellite
laboratories in Mildura and Goondiwindi. The MDFRC has become increasingly
involved in and supportive of the RMDSFR.
This project is proudly supported by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission,
CSIRO, and Norske-Skog Albury.
The mission of this Rotary project is:
-
To involve Rotary in a worthwhile
environmental project of importance to our country.
-
Demonstrate active Rotary concern for
the environment.
Involve as many Rotarians and Rotary Clubs as possible in a major
environmental project.
-
Establish a community 'window' to
promote the work of the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre.
-
Create opportunity for year 11-12
students to experience environmental science and the opportunity to work
alongside world class scientists at the MDFRC.
-
Give students an insight into the
opportunities that exist in the field of environmental research as a
possible direction for their future education.
-
Establish an international environmental
educational exchange of youth.
