Future Energy - Replacing Fossil Fuels with Biofuels
- Fossil fuels are a finite source of energy and contribute significantly to global warming.
- The case for renewable energy sources is strong. Biofuel is one option.
- Biofuel sources are currently corn, oilseeds and sugar cane.
- Biofuel crops compete for land and resources with food crops leading to food shortages and market distortions in food prices.
There is a need for new ways of producing biofuels as well as increasing efficiency of their production and that of food crops. This is a challenge for the emerging generation of graduates from agriculture and related areas and an opportunity to deliver positive change to the global community and its environment.
