Rose HolleyNovember 23 - Rose Holley

National Library of Australia, Manager Newspaper Digitisation Program

THE AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPERS DIGITISATION PROGRAM:
Helping communities access and explore their newspaper heritage

The National Library of Australia's newspaper digitisation program aims, through collaboration with the Australian state and territory libraries, to digitise and deliver a single major newspaper title (published between 1803-1953) from each Australian state and territory. This amounts to about three million pages, with further content being added later. These newspapers will be full text searchable at article level. This will revolutionise access to old newspapers by making them widely available on the internet and also keyword searchable. It is anticipated the digital achievements of the program will be of great significance to all Australians and be of enormous heritage value to the nation.

Rose Holley was appointed as Manager of the Newspaper Digitisation Program in April 2007. Rose has worked in a number of Information Management roles in the UK and New Zealand over the last 20 years. Before coming to the National Library of Australia she managed digital projects at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Speaking at the start of the second day of the conference Rose will give an overview of the processes, methods and technologies that are being utilised in the digitisation process. She will also outline the service, which supports a key objective of the Australian Newspaper Plan "that communities should be able to explore their rich newspaper heritage". This program will greatly improve access for all Australian's to historical newspapers and will give users the ability to rapidly and easily search across the newspapers in a freely publicly accessible system.
