BUSHFIRE 99 Conference![]() The BUSHFIRE 99 Conference will be hosted by Charles Sturt University, through the School of Environmental and Information Sciences, along with the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research, CSIRO and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The organisers include Mr Brian Lord (Convenor), Dr Malcolm Gill (CSIRO) and Dr Ross Bradstock (NSW NPWS). The Conference will be held from: Wednesday, 7 July 1999 to Friday, 9 July 1999 The Registration Desk will be operating from Tuesday, 6 July 1999, from 1 pm to 7pm. The following is a brief summary to date. The organising committee is anticipating well over 200 delegates to attend, with several excellent speakers including Dr James Clark, an eminent paleaoecologist from Duke University, North Carolina, USA. Dr Clark has been invited to produce a review of pre-historic fire regimes and biodiversity in Australia. Invited contributions from experienced scientists covering a cross-section of institutions and localities in Australia have been sought and accepted. A book will be produced from the major symposium on the theme, Flammable Australia: the fire regimes and biodiversity of a continuent. The book will be about 400 pages (B3 size) in hard back form and will retail at around $100. Further information will be available at the Registration Desk during the conference. The remainder of BUSHFIRE 99 will be devoted to contributed papers which will be published in a separate proceedings available at the conference. Conference Program, Abstracts and ProceedingsSee the Conference timetable for a full list of the papers to be presented. Abstracts are now visible online. Full papers from the conference proceedings will be available online by the time of the conference. Venue:The Albury Convention and Performing Arts Centre (ACPAC), Swift Street, Albury NSW, will be the venue for the conference. Albury-Wodonga (Winner of the 1995 NSW Tourism award for excellence) has a regional population of nearly 100,000 people. It is conveniently situated on the Hume Highway between Melbourne and Sydney, with Albury on the New South Wales side of the Murray River and Wodonga on the Victorian side. Travel:Albury is almost the geographic centre of Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. A free shuttle service will be available from Albury airport. Transport will also be provided during the conference between meeting and social venues, as required. Accommodation:Accommodation has been block-booked in a variety of motels and other lodgings. Mid-conference tour:A study tour of the River Region west of Albury has been organised for the afternoon of Thursday, 8 July 1998. The cost of the tour is included in the registration fee. Discover the wineries that make this region's wines world famous and sample some culinary delights. Other social events:The Organising Committee is keen to enhance the opportunities for formal and informal interactions amongst delegates attending BUSHFIRE 99. Hence, all sessions, morning and afternoon teas, and lunches will be held in one location. There will be social activities on each of the evenings of BUSHFIRE 99, and all activities, except for the Conference Dinner, are included in the registration fee. On-line registration:On-line registration is available to delegates now (as well as hard-copy registration) with an opportunity to pay via a credit card facility.
