Bequest Guidelines

Some donors have left a bequest, which is a gift in their will, to support Charles Sturt University through the Charles Sturt Foundation. All contributions, large or small, are valued and will allow the University to continue to offer a high standard of education. A bequest can be in the form of a:

• Specific bequest – this includes assets such as money, shares and bonds, property, books, paintings, etc. Gifts of any kind must be fully described so that they can be easily recognised.
• Residue gift – this includes part of or all of your Estate (the residue) after you have specified gifts for family or friends.
• Percentage bequest – this allows you to leave a specified percentage of your total estate to the University.

Donors may choose to designate the bequest for the general purpose of the University where the funds will be allocated to priorities of the University at the time. Alternatively, benefactors can specify what program they would like their bequest to support, such as scholarships, research projects, building programs, equipment or academic positions.

In the case of a designated bequest the Foundation will aim to administer the bequest as strictly to the donor’s intentions as possible. However, it is important to realise that institutions and society itself change constantly and what appears simple and unambiguous today may not make the same sense in years to come. To ensure the wording of the bequest is clear and reflects the donor’s wishes, but at the same time remains flexible to accommodate potential future changes, the Foundation recommends the following clauses for a bequest.

Suggested Wording for General Purpose Bequests

“I give and bequeath…

• my estate
• a portion/residue of my estate
• the sum of $...
• my real estate situated at…
• specific items

free of all duties and taxes to the Charles Sturt Foundation to be applied for the general purposes of the University and I declare that the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer of the said Foundation shall be full and sufficient discharge to my Executor or Trustee for the payment of this bequest.”

Suggested Wording for Specific Purpose Bequests

“I give and bequeath…

• my estate
• a portion/residue of my estate
• the sum of $...
• my real estate situated at…
• specific items

free of all duties and taxes to the Charles Sturt Foundation for its general purposes. I express the wish but without creating any binding trust that if practicable this gift be applied towards [describe purpose in as much detail as possible]. I declare that the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer of the said Foundation shall be full and sufficient discharge to my Executor or Trustee for the payment of this bequest.”

Examples of specific purpose bequests include:

• the awarding of an annual scholarship in my name at Charles Sturt University. I ask that any scholarship awarded in my name be given to female students from low social economic backgrounds.
• funding a research grant into …
• constructing a research laboratory to support Veterinary Science at CSU.

Staff Pledge Information

Through funds pledged to the Foundation it supports a range of programs including scholarships, capital projects such as the CPD and the Auditorium at Bathurst, the Charles Sturt Collection, the Pharmacy program, and some funded academic positions.

Historically, the Foundation's most successful activity has been providing undergraduate student scholarships. Many young Australians' professional lives have been considerably helped through the Foundation's scholarship program.

Benefactors include organisations, companies and individuals that all contribute to the educational life of many of our students. Many staff pledge regular donations from their pay.
Charles Sturt University staff can help the work of the Foundation by making regular, tax deductible contributions from their salary. Pledging $7.70 a fortnight provides the Foundation with $200 per year. However as little as $1 per fortnight can be pledged to help support students.

If you would like to pledge money to the Foundation please either contact the Foundation for a brochure or fill out a staff donation form .PDF
