International Experience Program - Makhampom Study Tour, Thailand

This Study Tour is a unique introduction to community theatre through an integrated program of training,
exchange, field experience, and performance practice with the Makhampom Theatre Group.
The 17-day program will bring together students, educators, community workers and theatre practitioners in a cross-cultural exchange, including students from other universities, southeast Asian internees and 5-7 Makhampom volunteers.
The group will play, train, discuss, research, devise, exchange, and perform together in an experiential process of exploring theatre for community cultural development, from community theatre to conflict resolution, from creative literacy education to community engagement.
Program Dates: June 16 - July 2, 2012
Number: unlimited (where vacancies exist)
Program Cost: $1,900 (this is a discount cost for Theatre Media students)*
* Students may also be eligible to receive a $500 travel grant through CSU Global if they are receiving credit for participation in this program.
Eligibility & Credit: Bachelor of Communication (Theatre/Media) students may be eligible for proficiency credit (elective subject). Please consult with your course coordinator regarding credit.

Indicative program outline:
The 17-day program normally includes:
- A 3-day Theatre for Community Cultural Development training;
- 4-6 performance workshops (Thai theatre, physical theatre, puppetry, music, & participant
workshops); - A 3-day performance devising process;
- A 2-day home-stay and exchange In Pang Daeng Nok village;
- Performance touring in 2 villages in Chiang Dao;
- Facilitating a workshop with Chiang Dao youth;
- Facilitating activities for school children at the Book Bike (storytelling in school) and the Children's Day art event at the Living Theatre;
- Bike-riding, artworks, Thai language and cooking at Makhampom;
- Tree-planting to carbon offset your travel footprint;
- Waterfalls, elephants, hot springs, caves around Chiang Dao;
- a day to explore Chiang Mai.
The Study Tour is suited to students, educators, community workers and theatre practitioners involved or
interested in theatre for development, community-based work, creative education, cross-cultural arts, conflict resolution and peace education, and cultural studies.
