Program Outline

Summer Cultural Program Includes:

 Courses
Korean Language
Through the medium of English, students will be introduced to the rich history and unique features of the Korean language and writing system. “Hangeul” is a convenient alphabet hailed by linguists worldwide as an excellent scientific writing system. Students will develop basic skills in reading, writing, and conversation during the course.
Korean Architecture
Building design expresses cultural roots and social values. A look at traditional and modern architecture will give insight into the natural, political, and religious influences that shaped the Korean peninsula. Students will appreciate the classroom information through relevant field-trip experiences.
Korean Cuisine
Although surrounded by China, Japan, and Russia, Korean food has retained a very unique style, presentation, and taste. This healthy and vibrant cuisine is gaining recognition and popularity around the world. Students will be able to enjoy learning about the wonderful world of Korean cuisine.
Korean Fashion
In all cultures, traditional costume is an indicator of national character and values. “Hanbok,” Korean traditional clothing, forms a highly effective expression of Korean identity and changes in hanbok design from the past to the present parallel the nation’s historical development. Moreover, forms, materials and designs in hanbok provide a glimpse into Korean lifestyle, while its colours indicate the values and world view of the Korean people. While the Korean fashion is becoming popular in the world markets, students can take an inspirational look into its history and influence.
Modern History of Korea
This course covers the period from mid-nineteenth century up to the present. It focuses on the character of Korean modernity and its relation to traditional society, and then details the main historical events and social, political, intellectual, and economic developments. The course will deal with questions of how development and modernization has affected Korean society and culture. Students will also examine Korean culture historically. This includes rethinking Confucian and Buddhist influence, the role of Japanese and American Military Government, military dictatorship and democratization process. In the class, many social issues such as economic development, recent issue of social inequality, population, family, and environment will be extensively discussed.
Intercultural Communication
This course is about communication within different cultures and communication between different cultures. Students will become attuned to the values, beliefs, and assumptions they hold generally and about communication specifically as they interact with people unlike themselves. The course allows students to understand the ways in which culture and communication intersect and influence each other. An emphasis will be placed on understanding the importance of context -social, cultural, historical, and political- in intercultural interactions and communication.
Korean Christianity and People
This course will guide students into a journey to the history and tradition of Korean Christianity. Students will explore the origin, development and uniqueness of Christianity, including its intellectual and cultural patterns. The course also considers the contemporary situation of Christianity, as well as the religious life of people in Korean society. Some audiovisual materials (e.g., films, pictures, etc.) complement the lectures and class discussion, illustrating the spiritual and cultural dimensions of Korean Christianity.
Korean Cinema and Culture
This course will explore a wide variety of Korean films, considering the context for each film and the expression of Korean culture therein. Each student will have at least a cursory grasp of the development of Korean cinema as an art and commercial enterprise reflecting Korean life in the modern age. The course will deal with such a variety of aspects in Korean culture as gender, class, changing social values, rural and urban life, and the influence of Hollywood and commercial concerns.

Extra-curricular Activities
Buddy Program
The HNU buddy will be paired to assist you with getting adjusted smoothly to the new surroundings. Availing of the budday program, students can make life-long friendship and learn about student life in Korea and venture around Daejeon.
Field Trips
Weekly field trips and fun-filled excursions to significant historical sites and famous tourist attractions across the nation will be arranged. Field trips are to be guided by faculty and staff members as well as buddies. The community spirit among the participants will be enhanced by the informality of such shared off-campus educational experiences. These journeys into the past provide an excellent supplement to the classroom experience and an authentic opportunity to fully become immersed in Korean culture.
Parties and events
At the beginning and end of the summer program, there will be welcome and farewell receptions - an opportunity to meet other students, faculty, and a number of HNU students who act as buddies during the entire session. Various smaller events such as karaoke night, movie-showings, and sports festivity will also be arranged. These events are a great opportunity to socialize with other students from different countries outside of class, and to experience Korean life on a first-hand basis.
