Accommodation:

Accommodation at the University of Limerick consists of five villages located throughout different areas of the campus. They are Thomond, Dromroe, Kilmurry, Plassey and Capavilla village. Residences are made up of apartments or houses and share common facilities such as central heating, cable television, communal kitchen, laundry and living areas and telephone and computer access. Bedrooms contain a bed, desk, wardrobe and en suite toilet and shower. Students must provide their own bed linen and pillows.

Exchange student support services:

The International Education Office of the University of Limerick was established in 2001 to offer support and advice to visiting international students. It organises an orientation program which familiarises students with the various services the university provides and guides them through any academic and health issues which may arise. The office also introduces students to staff and domestic students at Limerick and offers newly arrived students a collection service from Shannon Airport. Through the International Society international students will have the opportunity to participate in social activities and excursions for the duration of their stay.

Visa:

Students entering Ireland are required to show airport officials a valid student visa.
If a student visa is not mandatory, an offer letter from the University of Limerick is required. Australian students should check with their closest embassy for clarification. You should also take into account your intentions for travel through Europe before or after you commence your studies. Health Insurance: Australian students are required to have valid medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Ireland. This may be obtained under a student???s normal health insurance policy from home. Alternatively they may purchase a health insurance policy from Irish Insurers (Voluntary Health Insurance Board) through the International Education Office at a discounted price.

Students should ensure that Insurance policies cover such issues as:

  1. costs incurred if unable to complete studies
  2. travel expenses to return home due to relative who is ill
  3. travel expenses of relative visiting while you are ill
  4. cost of returning to your home for medical treatment
  5. cost of returning a body to home country for burial

Students are also required to complete a medical questionnaire form and return it to the university before they arrive.

About the University of Limerick:

The University is situated within a few miles of the city of Limerick on the river Shannon. It first opened its doors to students in 1972 and has since grown to student population of approximately 12000 and six colleges.

Location:

Limerick is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland and is located in the west of the country in county Limerick. It was founded by the Vikings over 1000 years ago and was later settled by the Norsemen who used it as a major trading port. Today it is a vibrant, modern city with 80000 inhabitants.

Climate:

Limerick's climate can be described as mild and temperate. Summers are warm and comfortable and winter temperatures, although chilly, are rarely cold enough for snowfall. Average low and high temperature ranges (in degree Celsius):

Culture;

The architecture of Limerick reflects its ancient history and tourists flock to the city to visit the castles, museums and ruin that form Limerick???s unique character. Just some of the sites to be visited are King John's Castle, St Mary???s Cathedral and the Hunt Museum which houses works of art by by Leonardo da Vinci, Renoir and Picasso. County Limerick also has numerous places of interest to visit for those who wish to explore the outlying region.

Being a cultural city, Limerick has a thriving artistic scene. The Belltable theatre hosts theatre, film, music and poetry exhibitions throughout the year as well as other artistic events. The city of Limerick is also is home to the Irish Concert Orchestra, the Irish World Music Centre, the Island Theatre group and the Daghdha Dance Company.

The University of Limerick has its own well respected art gallery, the Bourn Vincent Gallery which houses the university's own art works as well as visiting works. Students at the university can develop and explore their creative side by joining one of the societies on campus. There is a wide spectrum of groups ranging from drama to politics.

Sport;

Limerick has a reputation of being the sporting capital of Ireland. An example of the sports represented here are rugby, fishing, football, golf, cycling, equestrian sports and hurling ??? a fast paced Irish ballgame.

Of all the 60 clubs at the University of Limerick almost two thirds are sporting groups. There are 29 clubs to join, ranging from the 'traditional' sports such as basketball, rugby, golf and athletics, to the more unusual, such as skydiving, hurling and trampolining. The clubs at the University of Limerick are supported by the University of Limerick Sports Department and have access to all the resources of the department including the University Of Limerick Arena - the largest indoor sporting complex in Ireland.
