Mental health
- 10 health region study of family friendly practice in Victorian Adult Mental health Service - International linkages (Canada)
- Evaluation of the new NSW Police Mental Health Implementation Teams, designed to enhance Police responses to incidents involving a person with a mental illness – including consideration of its adaptability for rural community settings
- Evaluation and advice for the North East Riverina Rural Counselling Service’s Building Inland Community Resilience project, funded by the Australian Government over 2 years
- Member of a consortium of eight local organisations led by the Riverina Division of General Practice, which is funded $1.1 million to provide youth mental health services for the Riverina region, under the Headspace program
- Represented on the Steering Committee of the Mental Health Community-Based project of the Deniliquin-based Regional Social Development Group, which has been funded $2 million by the Australian Government for 3 years to deliver services to small rural communities in the Riverina-Murray
Dentistry & oral health
Heart & lung health & fitness
- Coordinating the Crop Stubble Burning & Health project, involving 6 government and research organisations, as part of a broader crop stubble management project led by the Graham Centre, located at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga
- CSU researchers from the Cardiovascular Research Group and Health Schools are conducting a range of projects to address prevention and management of chronic heart failure, diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, and renal disease, with one area of focus being inland communities
Cancer prevention & life with cancer
- Represented on the South West Region Advisory Committee of the NSW Cancer Council
- Overseeing the regional arm of a major research project of the NSW Cancer Council, conducted in collaboration with the Riverina Cancer Care Centre
Muscle, bone & joint health
- Leading projects involving Greater Southern Area Health Service and the Riverina Division of General Practice & Primary Health to examine rates, causes and countermeasures for falls in older people of inland communities
- Supporting local practitioners undertaking research into management of musculo-skeletal disease in inland communities
Ageing & health
- Leading projects involving Greater Southern Area Health Service and the Riverina Division of General Practice & Primary Health to examine rates, causes and countermeasures for falls in older people of inland communities
- Development of a regional service register for older people
Health services & workforce
- Contracted by the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services & Teaching to develop recommendations for approaches to Community-Based Rehabilitation in rural & remote NSW
- Contracted by NSW Health to evaluate three models of Rural Allied Health locum relief across NSW
- Funded by Charles Sturt University to examine and recommend optimal models for rural university clinics
- Funded by the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services & Teaching to evaluate the Rural Pathways Program for students in medicine, dentistry and other health professions
- Supporting local practitioners undertaking research into new models of rural health service delivery
- Examination of the processes of decision-making in rural pharmacy and development of recommendations for practice
- Working with GPlogic on projects that will enhance training of General Practitioners for rural practice
- Support for the Wagga Medical Specialist Recruitment Committee in its efforts to attract specialists to the region
Inland community capacity for health promotion
- Contracted by the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services & Teaching to develop recommendations for approaches to Community-Based Rehabilitation in rural & remote NSW
- Contracted by the NSW Roads & Traffic Authority to evaluate Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plans and Bike Plans developed for communities in South West NSW
- Working with Vision Australia & Age Concern to evaluate an exercise program designed to enhance community mobility for people with a vision impairment, in inland community settings
Initiatives to benefit specific groups
- A number of other projects are planned to address health issues faced by members of our inland communities who are Indigenous Australians or who were born overseas. The Centre for Inland Health has R&D teams dedicated to this work
