The Real Y2K Problem: Understanding Libraries in the New Century
The last half of the 20th century brought about more changes in libraries than the previous millennium. A large force behind many of these changes was the advent of digital technology, which began to transform libraries so thoroughly that they threaten to be unrecognisable in the new century. Another source of change was the appearance of problems so immense that they threatened the library community's ability to preserve the full body of recorded knowledge unless solutions were found. So vast were these changes that even the name of the discipline had to be expanded to include the larger and more diffuse notion of library and information science.
As a result of the scope and speed of change in libraries during this time, librarians have been challenged as never before to redefine their mission and roles as they enter the new century. Based on data relating to the growth of traditional publishing, the rapid development of electronic publishing, the progress of digital libraries and distance learning, and various other factors, this address will project the emerging parameters of the next century library and suggest how the roles of librarians will change.

Collaborating to Compete: the Search for New Alliances
The rapid evolution of the digital networked information environment has swept away many of the certainties that have underpinned the library service ethos for the past few decades. The repositioning of service goals and management strategies are essential for long term survival.
This presentation explores the process of repositioning in a service environment where collaboration is essential in order to compete, where strategic alliances with other service industries becomes a necessity and where library managers have to rethink both the rationale and the mechanisms for collaboration between libraries.

Why Is A Raven Like A Writing Desk?; Or, Answering The Riddle Of Client Services
The Hatter asked Alice, "Why is a raven like a writing-desk?" "I give up," Alice replied: "What's the answer?" "I haven't the slightest idea," said the Hatter. Alice sighed wearily. "I think you might do something better with the time," she said, "than waste it in asking riddles that have no answers."
Librarians today are facing increasing demands for services while coping with stable or declining levels of fiscal and human resources. To survive in an environment of escalating expectations, libraries are looking for new answers as to how they can become more nimble to develop effective strategies and practical solutions. This presentation will explore two interconnected approaches to answer the riddle. The first approach is to control client expectations by developing and articulating a comprehensive client services program. The second approach is for libraries to work through library consortia not only to expand access to print and electronic collections, but also to develop innovative and dynamic new services.
