Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid logoMental health first aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

CSU Student Services is committed to the health and wellbeing of its students.

In 2011 CSU trained many of its staff in the Mental Health First Aid Course (MHFA). Seeing the benefits of having our community more aware of mental health issues and support available, in 2012 Student Services staff completed instructor training and have now gone on to share their knowledge with hundreds of students and staff on various campuses. To date Student Services has been involved in training staff and students on the Bathurst, Albury, Wagga and Orange campuses in MHFA.

The course trains members of the public to give early help to developing mental health problems and assistance in crisis situations. It involves 12 hours of training: 4 modules of 3 hours each.

MHFA Content includes Mental health problems in Australia, Mental health first aid action plan, Depression, Anxiety , Psychosis, Substance misuse and Mental health crises. Crisis situations discussed include a person who is suicidal or self-harming, a person having a panic attack, a person who has experienced a traumatic event, a person in a severe psychotic state, a person with severe effects from alcohol or other drug misuse and also a person with aggressive behaviour.
