About the courses
The Emergency Management industry is growing and the impact of major emergency/disaster events, both in Australia and around the world, constantly draws attention to the need for effective management of emergencies, such as the 2001 World Trade Centre bombings, the 2004 Asian Tsunami, the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, 2006 Cyclone Larry, 2009 Victorian Bushfires. The questioning of emergency management capabilities and qualifications following major events has also caused some practitioners to consider acquisition of formal qualifications in emergency management.
These courses are the only Emergency Management degrees offered by distance education in Australia. There is no other specific Emergency Management masters degree in Australia. The Bachelor of Emergency Management is the longest running undergraduate Emergency Management course in Australia.
Students are required to work with community groups in the undertaking of emergency management activities, aimed at allowing them to demonstrate their capabilities in practice and also benefiting the communities through the enhancement of emergency management strategies and practices. The ability to practically apply the skills and knowledge learnt in an industry or community environment as part of their assessment means that students retain that knowledge and skills.
Bachelor of Emergency Management – six years by distance education. This course is designed to give a broad appreciation from a middle management perspective of the concepts, principles and practices involved in effective emergency management. Developed for those persons already connected in some way with emergency management, this course will enhance students’ current practices and capabilities and enhance the chances of future promotion and job advancement. This course provides students with skills, knowledge and best practice in the areas of Emergency Management Planning, Operations Management and Recovery Management. Students could utilise these skills to enhance their chances of obtaining full time employment in an emergency management agency or allied industry, or could enhance promotion prospects for those already employed in the emergency management industry.
Master of Emergency Management – two years by distance education.
This degree is designed to allow students employed within an emergency management related field to enhance their understanding and practice in emergency and risk management through the conduct of workplace/industry projects, thereby enhancing their own capabilities and improving an area of emergency management practice within a community or industry setting. Students in the postgraduate course will be able to enhance their current knowledge and skills, thereby improving their chances of promotion within the industry.
