ADPP Pre Uniform Dress Standards

Pre uniform standards for Session 1, 1A, 1B, Field Placements and Session 2 (Students go into uniform part-way through Session 2)

Policing Students are to ensure they are correctly dressed and well groomed at all times whilst at the Police Academy.  A smart appearance engenders self-confidence and promotes a positive public image. Clothing is to be in good repair, neat, clean and well pressed. Shoes are to be in a clean and polished state at all times and kept in a serviceable condition.
Maintaining a standard similar to that expected by uniformed staff will ensure a natural transition to wearing police uniform in Session 2.

The minimum standard expected of ADPP Students in Session 1 Field Placements and Session 2 (pre-uniform issue) are as follows:

Male Students

  • Covered leather shoes - Conservative in style, black or brown in colour.
  • Socks - Dark coloured socks.
  • Trousers - Business style trousers of a conservative design preferably dark coloured. Subdued pin stripes are permitted. Trousers are not to be worn low around the bottom of the hips or buttocks. Where belt loops are present, students are to wear a belt secured around waist level.
  • Shirt - Short or long sleeved button up shirt with collar. Colour choice should be conservative in nature with no brand names or prints.
  • Tie - A tie is to be worn by students year round excepting extreme hot weather where the Principal of the Academy may direct ties to be removed. Ties are to be of a conservative design and to be of a solid colour or simple pattern. Character ties etc are not permitted.
  • Jacket/ Coat - Business, lounge and sports jackets and coats are all appropriate as long as they are of a conservative design and colour. Jackets and Coats are optional items.
  • Jumper/ Vest - A woollen jumper or sleeveless vest may be worn as long as it is a conservative design preferably black or navy in colour and does not have brand names or prints. Jumpers and vests are optional items.

Female Students

  • Covered leather shoes - Conservative in style and preferably black or brown in colour. High heel or stiletto styles are not permitted.
  • Socks/ Stockings/ Tights - Are to be dark in colour.
  • Slacks - Business style slacks of a conservative design preferably dark in colour. Subdued pin stripes are permitted. Slacks are not to be worn low around the bottom of the hips or buttocks. Where belt loops are present, students are to wear a belt secured around waist level.
  • Skirts - Business style skirts pleated or A-Line preferably dark in colour. Hems must not be shorter than the line behind the knee.
  • Shirt/ Blouse - Conservative in design and colour. Sleeveless shirts/blouses and plunging necklines are not permitted.
  • Jackets/ Coats - Business or conservative style jackets or coats are appropriate as long as they are of a conservative design and colour. Jackets and Coats are optional items.
  • Jumper/ Vest - A woollen jumper or sleeveless vest may be worn as long as it is a conservative design preferably dark in colour and any brand names should be small and conservative. Jumpers and vests are optional items.

During fitness training (Male & Female)

  • Navy T-shirt (no singlet) and navy shorts.
  • Shorts must be above the knees.
  • In winter - track pants may be worn over shorts.
  • You must wear quality, well-fitted running shoes (no basketball shoes etc).
  • You are not permitted to wear any jewellery (including wedding rings).
  • Women must have their hair tied back in a bun or ponytails or with a hair net, bobby pins.  Navy or black scrunchies only.

Cold Weather Clothing (Male & Female)

  • Gloves - Knitted woollen, fleecy or leather. Must be dark coloured. Gloves may be worn at morning parades.  Gloves should be removed during indoor class lessons or when the training requirements require students NOT to wear gloves.
  • Beanies - Knitted woollen or fleecy. Must be dark in colour and any brand names should be small and conservative. Beanies must be removed when entering buildings at the Police Academy.
  • Anoraks/ duffle coats/ parkers/ overcoats - Must be of a conservative design and dark in colour any brand names should be small and conservative.

Casual Attire (Male & Female)

When students are not attending programmed lectures or activities the minimum standard of dress is the same standard expected for the Academy dining room. This includes:

  • Collared shirt, modest blouse or polo shirt
  • Trousers, slacks, jeans, cargo pants, cargo shorts or modest skirt
  • Clean dress joggers (permissible with socks)
  • Student identification is to be worn on the right side of the chest and is to be clearly visible. It is to be worn at all times while on the Academy grounds.

 

You should note that the following are not permitted:

  • Sleeveless tops, midriff tops, T-shirts, football tops
  • Thongs, joggers or high-heeled shoes
  • Jeans
  • Clothing with offensive language thereon
  • Outlandish hairstyles

 

Appearance

Personal Hygiene

All students must present in a clean, hygienic manner.

Hairstyles and Grooming

Hair should be neatly groomed and comply with regulations. Extreme hairstyles, radical/unnatural/combination colours and stepped cuts are not permitted. Do not let the hair on the back of your head extend below the collar.

  • Male Students
    All male students will shave each morning before any class or parade unless wearing an approved style beard or moustache. These should conform to policy and be neatly trimmed. Ensure hair on the back of your head is gradually tapered in a line from the earlobes to shirt collar (short back and sides).
  • Female Students
    If you have long hair, secure in a 'bun'. Ponytails/free swinging plaits are not allowed. If hair is braided in plaits, secure them to your head. Dark blue grooming aids such as hair combs, clips, hair nets and 'scrunchies' may be worn with long hair when it is formed into a bun.

Cosmetics

Female students may wear makeup and clear or conservative coloured nail polish in moderation only.

Jewellery, watches and piercings

Only wrist watches, engagement, wedding and eternity rings and approved emergency medical bracelets may be worn. A single, conservative ring is also permitted. No earrings, visible trinkets and necklaces, jewellery or piercings of any kind are to be worn.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses must be conservative in style and colour. They are to be removed when entering buildings, participating in parades or at any other time when directed by Instructional Staff.  Students with prescription sunglasses are to ensure they have standard prescription glasses available.
