Change of Preference
Going to university will see a huge change in your life. It’s an exciting time that combines hard work and a lot of fun. Because most degree courses are either three or four years it‘s important to make sure you have picked the right degree. Keep in mind it’s not just about the name of the course - you need to make sure you look at the subjects and electives on offer then decide if it’s right for you and your future career path.
Make sure you choose a course that will really interest you: something that will build you as a person; a course that will ensure that you are off to a flying start in your career once you leave Charles Sturt University (CSU). Now that your results are in you need to consider your options:
- you achieved the score you wanted?
- you did better than you had expected?
- you didn’t get achieve the score you hoped for and didn’t get an offer?
- you want to change your preference?
You achieved the score you wanted?
Well done! You can now plan your journey to your dream career with CSU supporting you along the way. Here are some more things for you to consider.
Scholarships
CSU offers a range of scholarships to assist students in their studies. Scholarships can be one-off or an annual payment, and can range from AUD$2000 to AUD$6000. For more information on scholarships, visit the scholarships page:-
CSU Global - international exhange program
CSU Global, the international exchange program offers CSU students an opportunity to study overseas and gain credits towards their degree. Full-time internal or distance education students living in Australia can study at selected universities for one or two semesters without paying extra tuition fees. There are also many other options and opportunities. For more details, visit the CSU Global page:-
Orientation
Orientation marks the beginning of studies for new students. It's designed to help you settle into University and provide you with information to fully prepare you for the start of classes. Take the opportunity to find out about the different teaching and learning processes of the university, familiarise yourself with your new surroundings, pick up details about your course and get to know your lecturers, tutors and other new students. Orientation is the official start of the university year, so it's important that you come along. For information on what is planned, visit the Orientation page:-
Accommodation
CSU has recognised the need for many prospective students to find accommodation in each of the cities in which it operates. The University operates major residential campuses at Bathurst, Orange and Wagga Wagga and has developing residential operations at Albury-Wodonga and Dubbo. The diversity and extent of the residential operations of the University is large.
At CSU you need to apply on-line for on-campus accommodation when you receive your offer of a course place. You cannot do so before you receive an offer. Make sure that you understand the accommodation options available on your chosen campus so that you can complete the application by the due date. CSU has introduced a new accommodation system that will enable students who get either an early round or a main round offer to get an accommodation guarantee. For more information, visit the Accommodation site:
You did better than you expected?
- Consider adding to your preferences new courses that you wanted to do, but didn't think you would get into. Visit our courses page.
- If you add a new course, check that you have the assumed knowledge and have met any extra requirements.
- It's very important that you do not add new courses to your list just because you now have the marks that might make selection possible. You should only apply for courses you are interested in, motivated to study and believe you can do well in.

Double degrees
A student studying a double degree undertakes two separate degrees simultaneously. A double degree will give you the chance to:
- stretch yourself
- save years of study time by studying two degrees concurrently
- enjoy the diversity a wider range of subjects
- graduate with two different Bachelor degrees
- have greater career options into the future
You didn’t get the score you hoped for and didn’t get an offer
The most important thing to realise is that if you didn't get the UAI/ENTER you were hoping for, all is not lost! You have a number of options available to you.
Contact the University
Firstly, it is vital that you contact the University and talk to a Prospective Student Adviser (PSA) about your options and the likelihood of you gaining a place at CSU. PSA's have the most up-to-date information about UAI/ENTER cut-offs as well as alternative methods of entry to university. Remember, the UAI/ENTER listed in the UAC or VTAC guide is only the number used to determine entry for last year's students. It may be different now!

Other Pathways into university
- TAFE - Consider a TAFE course first. CSU recognises TAFE qualifications as an indicator of your likelihood of success at university, and some TAFE courses ‘articulate’ with CSU courses.
- Single subject study - allows you to study without having to commit to a full degree. For more information about single study visit the website
Single Subject Study - STUDY LINK programs are a great way to brush up on your study skills or to skill up in an area you did not study at school, e.g. chemistry, maths or physics. The best way is to do STUDYLINK subjects before you start your course, but you can also do them after you have enrolled. As a bonus, STUDYLINK subjects are free for many students. You just want to change your preference
- Not sure which order to list your preferences?
- You want to change your preferences?
- What are the dates for changing your preferences?
- When will you receive an offer?
- You have been made an offer to a course, but it wasn't your first preference. What should you do?
- How do you accept an offer?
- Can you defer my offer?
Not sure which order to list your preferences?
You should list your preferences in the order in which you would like to be made an offer. If you do not receive an offer for your first preference you will be considered, with all other eligible applicants, for your second preference, and so on. Please ensure that you:
- Enter your preferences in the order in which you would like to receive an offer.
- Avoid entering courses that you do not intend to accept, if an offer is made.
You want to change your preferences?
After receiving your UAI/ENTER or equivalent interstate score, you may need to reassess your course preferences.
For example: An applicant anticipated an entry score of 75 and based their course selections on this score. However, when their results were released they received an entry score of 89, opening up new course possibilities. The applicant may choose to change their preferences and include courses with a higher cut off.
To change your preferences you will need your UAC or VTAC application number and PIN. Full instructions are provided once you are logged in.
Please note: Changing your preferences replaces all previously entered preferences so you must enter each preference again.
UAC: You will need to access the UAC website to change your preference.
VTAC: You will need to change your preferences on the VTAC website.
Please note: You CANNOT change your preferences in writing, by letter, fax or email.
What are the dates for changing your preferences?
UAC
You can add, delete, or change the order of your preferences as many times as you like, during the periods shown in the table below.
Preferences MUST be changed before midnight on the closing date below, for consideration in the offer rounds.

| Wednesday 4 February - Thursday 5 February 2009 |

VTAC
You CANNOT change your preferences after the closing date and time shown below, under any circumstances.
| VTAC - Change of preferences | |
|---|---|
| Change of preference for all timely applicants | 9 October ( 9am ) - 17 October ( 5pm ) |
| Opens for all applicants | 1 December ( 9am ) |
| Closes for all applicants ( excluding Year 12 WA and International Baccalaureate applicants) | 22 December (12noon) |

When will you receive an offer?
Main Round offers for 2009 will be:
- UAC - 21 January.
- VTAC - 20 January.
You have been made an offer to a course, but it wasn't your first preference. What should you do?
When you receive an offer, you should not assume that you will also receive an offer in the following rounds. If you receive an offer and do not accept it, you may miss out on going to University.
Accepting an offer, which may be for a course at a lower preference, does not stop you from being considered in later rounds for a course you have nominated at a higher preference. You may therefore receive a later offer for a course that is higher on your list of preferences than the course you were first offered.
How do you accept an offer?
When you are made an offer, you will receive information from UAC/ VTAC and the offering university. Each university operates differently, so you should check with individual universities on their process.
You need to sign and return the Offer of Admission sent to you by UAC / VTAC and fill in and return the relevant documents to Charles Sturt University.
You MUST return all required documents by the date specified. Failure to do so may result in the loss of your offer.
Can you defer your offer?
Deferring your offer allows you to delay the commencement of your course for 12 months. The following CSU courses cannot be deferred in this way
- Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic)
- Bachelor of Dental Science
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Services)
- Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic)
- Bachelor of Veterinary Science
