Assessment
Distance education students are assessed through a combination of methods that vary depending on the course being undertaken. In some subjects, an assessment may be held online, giving instant feedback to the student on their performance.
Written essays, examinations, online assessments or seminars serve as a guide to a student’s progress and understanding of a topic. Assessment can include short answer questions, practical work, field or laboratory work or tutorial presentations. Exams take many formats depending on the field of study, but may include short answer, multiple choice and essay form, among others. Prior exam papers are available online through the Library for many subjects.
Distance education students have the option of submitting assignments electronically through specially developed online technology, called EASTS. Assignments can be submitted earlier than their due date. Extensions may be granted in certain circumstances.
You can study via distance education from anywhere in the world. Distance education students may attend examinations at locations in most metropolitan and regional centres throughout Australia or in one of our examination centres in most major cities around the world. No student is required to travel more than 120km to attend an examination.
“Study materials were sent to him in Antarctica, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Macquarie Island - in fact, CSU made Macquarie Island a temporary exam centre for him. Andrew submitted assignments from the base camp at Mt Everest and at one point had to negotiate with Nepalese rebels for the return of his laptop. The issue of distance was overcome by harnessing telecommunications. If we can find Andrew, we can find you!.”
