CSU’s Albury-Wodonga Campus is Australia’s first environmentally friendly university campus and is a developing, dynamic model of how communities can address environmental concerns and sustainable living for decades to come. Its Thurgoona site demonstrates how architecture and land use can be compatible with lifestyle, work and the environment.

The University’s commitment to the environment can be seen in a wide range of design features on the campus including buildings made from rammed earth and recycled building materials, rehabilitated creeks and wetlands, windmills and solar collectors.

The principles used in building the Thurgoona site demonstrates a comprehensive, environmentally sensitive process that spans from site planning to selection of materials. Special features of the site include the minimal use of energy and on-site management of water and waste.

Environmental benefits of the project address local, regional and national concerns for global warming, ozone depletion, genetic diversity and air and water pollution.

 World leader status for CSU

A recently completed building on Charles Sturt University’s Thurgoona site has been awarded six green stars and ‘world leader’ status for its environmentally sustainable features. Advanced design principles and innovative use of state-of-the-art materials have resulted in the Albury-Wodonga Campus Academic Accommodation Building becoming the first public building in inland Australia to be rated as six green stars. Officially opened last October by Australia’s Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Quentin Bryce, AC, the $4.25 million two storey building includes a ground-breaking material which helps regulate temperatures inside buildings to reduce the need for air conditioning. Albury-Wodonga Campus has already won international and national awards for its energy efficient buildings and waste water management systems.
