“Cross-country skiing, ice fishing, sledding across frozen rivers, and even completing a university subject in dog sledding were just some of the highlights of my CSU exchange experience in Canada.
Studying at Lakehead University in Ontario, I made the most of my semester breaks, travelling across Canada and into the USA. A major highlight was joining a class on a nine-day dog sledding expedition in Minnesota, USA. The nine days were spent sledding across frozen lakes with day temperatures down to -17°C. I also went winter camping for three days during which I built a snow shelter to sleep in, learnt how to light a fire with a flint and steel, went cross country skiing and backcountry skiing, along with ice fishing.
“I still found time to complete five subjects while on exchange, which included Outdoor Skills and Theory II, Dog Sledding, Outdoor Education Practices, Nature Based Tourism, and Expedition Management.
“The international study experience made me really appreciate university life and truly made me excited to come back to Australia to continue my learning. I now have direction and purpose in my life, something that I may have never discovered unless I went on exchange. I would encourage any student to build up the courage and definitely go on exchange. Try something new, let go of the familiar and challenge yourself. You will learn so much about yourself and it will honestly make you a better person. You will emerge from the experience as a new, revitalised, and extremely happy person…go for it!”

“A definite highlight of the course was travelling to Tasmania as part of my six-week work placement and partaking in a great volunteer remote area weeding program which involved being dropped by helicopter into the wilderness and walking down the coastline removing invasive plants.
“Attending the Students of Sustainability Conference in Perth in 2007 and becoming part of a national student environmental movement was another highlight.
“I also gained skills in researching and writing which significantly increased my employability, giving me the confidence to apply for management positions.”

"I recently returned from a Student Exchange Program to Lakehead University in Canada. I loved the outdoor recreation and geography subjects I completed and got out in the Canadian environment to learn much more. I developed my skills and knowledge of ecological literacy, and became passionate and driven to keep learning.
"I travelled extensively and made some of the greatest friendships.
"If you’re considering going on exchange I would say 'go for it.' It is an opportunity of a lifetime."
