The Charles Sturt University Winery is a producer of premium varietal table wines. It is an integral part of Australia's leading Agriculture and Wine Science School and as such is at the forefront of viticultural practices and wine making techniques.It is seen as important that the winery reflect the same environment as other commercial Australian wineries, being market driven and producing the quality and styles of wine that obtain ready acceptance from discerning wine consumers in the open market place.
The winery is an accountable commercial operation and provides stimulating training for those students employed through a winery scholarship. The practical experience the students obtain helps prepare them for challenging careers in the wine industry. The wines are sold through the Cellar Door at Wagga Wagga and the soon to be opened Cellar Door at Orange. The wine is also sold in selected premium wine retail outlets in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
The winery has been rated as a 41/2 star winery in 2012 James Halliday Wine Companion, was a finalist in the Tourism Winery Category of the 2009 Inland NSW Tourism Awards and was Winner in 2010 for the category of Tourism Wineries, Distilleries & Boutique Breweries.
The winery focuses on its own range of premium table, fortified and sparkling wines produced from grapes grown in its own vineyards on both the Orange and Wagga Wagga campuses. The winery also sources grapes from the wine-growing regions stretching from Orange to the Hilltops region around Young through to Tumbarumba in the Snowy Mountains and down to Gundagai.
Since its inception in 1977 has been awarded over 28 trophies, 98 gold, 18 silver and 483 bronze medals in National Wine Shows!
