Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to access the university network when working from an off-campus location using a CSU managed device. It gives you the ability to access university resources as if you were on campus (e.g. P and S drive), while ensuring data is encrypted.

Although data between your computer and the University network is secured by the VPN, you need to maintain other security measures (e.g. strong passwords and logging out of systems when you have finished using them).

VPN access is granted upon activation of a staff account

Accounts are added to the staff users group by default. If you need to be added to another group, please contact the IT Service Desk advising which group and services you need remote access to.

Obtaining and installing VPN software

The AnyConnect (VPN) client is available for Windows and Mac OSX. Please download the installer by clicking on the appropriate link:

Once the VPN client has installed, it will connect you to the VPN (this is a one-time installation).

Using the VPN

  • Open the VPN client
  • Type '' into the drop-down box if it does not appear
  • Click 'Connect'
  • When prompted select the group. CSU-Staff is the default access group for staff. If you select CSU-Staff or CSU-Admin, you'll need to enter your Duo passcode as well as your CSU username and password
  • Enter your CSU username and password, click 'OK'
  • The client will indicate you are connected and can now work as if you were on the CSU campus network

Multi-Factor Authentication (Duo Security) must be used for Staff and Admin VPN access. Duo Security must be set up before Staff or Admin level VPN access can be used.

Disconnect from the VPN

  • Right click on the VPN icon
  • Click VPN Disconnect

Provision, management and support of the VPN is funded by the University and provided at no extra cost to staff.

If you are having problems logging on to the VPN, ensure you:

  • have the latest version of the AnyConnect (VPN) client (4.6.02074) installed
  • are entering your current CSU password
  • have selected the correct VPN group. If you are using Staff or Admin VPN, you'll need to enter your Duo passcode
  • clear your browser's cache, close and reopen your browser and try again if you receive an 'Access Denied' message
