File Storage P and S drive

What Is This Service?

DIT provide access to reliable centrally managed locations for storing, sharing and securing files. The P and S drive provide safe and secure network file storage and can be easily accessed from Windows based computers.

Each Faculty, Division and Centre have shared folders on the S drive which can be accessed at any time from both on and off campus. Share Administrators are given full control of their storage area to manage the file and folder access requirements for staff in their team. Once the Share Administrator grants the appropriate permissions staff can easily organise their area on the S drive to collaborate and share files. Organisation can include creating folders and granting different access level permissions to suit their collaborative needs. The P drive provides staff with a private area to save files they are working on and not yet ready to share on the S drive.

Backups are completed regularly to guard essential University information and snapshots are taken twice a day to assist staff to recover files that were accidently deleted or have become corrupted.

Redundancies are built into our file storage system to minimise outages and ensure the service is restored as quickly as possible in the event of a disaster. The service does not currently have automatic fail-over. The manual fail-over process requires about 90 minutes to restore access during normal business hours.

What Is Included?

  • S: drive folder structure represents the organisational structure of the University allowing staff in the same faculty or division to easily share files
  • Ability to access files off campus through VDI or on a CSU owned laptop that is connected to VPN
  • Ability to request restore of files to a previously backed up state to recover from accidental deletion or corruption where possible
  • Ability to request Share Administrator rights to enable staff to manage access to their school or sectional work folders on the S: drive
  • Capacity planning for growth of University storage requirements
  • Testing and maintenance of data backup and restore systems to ensure availability and recovery targets are obtainable

How Do I Initiate This Service?

All permanent staff have access to a P: drive.  This drive is available when you log into a CSU computer.  Share Administrators provide the required level of access to S: drive for each staff member upon request.  This access is not provided automatically and requests for access must be directed to the Share Administrator in your section.

How Much Does It Cost?

Provision, management and support of the file storage service is funded by the University and provided at no additional cost to staff.
