Competency- the skills and knowledge required to perform specific tasks in predictable circumstances; it concentrates on behaviours and performance. Competencies are “necessary but not sufficient for effective practice”. (Scott & McKellar, 2012, p.8).
Capability - involves emotional and social intelligence and the ability to analyse situations and problem solve. It is a holistic, integrating, creative, multidimensional and fluid phenomenon... more about what is going on inside a person’s head”. (Scott, Coates & Anderson, 2008, p12)
The capabilites and competencies overlap and all are necessary for effective performance.
