Defence Force leave

If you're a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), you may be eligible for Defence Force Leave.

Entitlement

An employee who is a volunteer part-time member of the Defence Force may receive 10 working days in any calendar year. The University may grant Defence Force Leave for:

  • deployment
  • training camps
  • drill parade
  • school
  • courses of instruction.

In instances where the University receives the Federal Government Employer Support Scheme, we will provide 12 weeks of 'top up' paid leave. This will equal the difference between the employee’s Defence Force income and their University salary.

Casual staff are not eligible for Defence Force leave.

Applying for Defence Force leave

To apply, complete the Defence Force Leave form.

Employer Support Payment Scheme (ESPS)

CSU is registered with the Employer Support Payment Scheme (ESPS). The ESPS provides financial assistance to offset the costs of releasing employees for most categories of ADF service.

For full-time employees, ESPS payments are made at a set weekly rate equivalent to average weekly full-time adult ordinary time earnings (AWOTE). You can find current rates on the Defence Reserves Support website.

To be eligible for the University to make a claim, you must have:

  • completed a minimum of five consecutive days of Defence service
  • served a qualifying period of two weeks of Defence service in the current financial year. You can complete this in a single period or in blocks of five consecutive days or longer.

Supporting documentation

You must provide evidence of your requirement to attend and a Certificate of Attendance.

If you're applying for more than 10 working days paid leave in any calendar year, you must also provide:

  • a copy of the ESPS claim form (please complete Employee/Reservist details and claim dates)
  • the appropriate ESPS staff address (Navy, Army, or Air Force and State) for submission of claims.
