In the digital age, it is essential we equip our students with the skills to find, use, generate and disseminate information and knowledge in personal, professional and social contexts. Digital literacy opens up opportunities to develop new relationships, resources and applications. Digital literacy is a key component of professionalism and will empower our graduates to succeed in the careers and in their communities.

  • Understand the opportunities afforded by technology as well as the rights and responsibilities of digital users.
  • Evaluate, select and use appropriate technology for use in their studies. For example, group assignments may be facilitated by digital collaboration tools.
  • Explore the ethical and legal obligations of the use of digital literacy in the context of the chosen profession.
  • Perform tasks using technologies currently in use in their chosen professional context and critically examine the inherent advantages and risks of the technology.

Course Requirements

  • At least one assessment item using innovative technology relevant to their professional practice
  • At least one assessment item including the legal and ethical implications of the safe use of technology in a professional context

Teaching Practices

  • Define etiquette for online interactions between students and with staff and other professionals
  • Activities that require students to research, synthesize and present information in digital formats. 
  • Encourage students to explore employment opportunities supported through digital platforms such as LinkedIn. 
  • Case studies examining ethical and legal aspects of using and generating digital information. 
  • Participation in, or creation of, simulated practical experiences
  • Assessment tasks and topics that use technologies appropriate to the discipline/profession. 
  • Online collaboration activities (eg discussion boards, wikis, blogs, thinkspace)


Assessment of this GLO can include contextualised assessments that allow students the opportunity to select and demonstrate the appropriate and effective use of technologies. Assessments should develop practical knowledge, skills, and critical evaluation that develop the foundation for their professional practice.

For example

  • In groups of 4, identify a current event or issue relevant to the subject. Post a summary article for your peers on a discussion board. Encourage comments and further discussion by responding positively to peer feedback. Add challenging, thoughtful or provocative comments to guide the discussion.
  • Recreate a case study using technology that is used in the workplace. Examine the opportunities and limitations offered by the technology.
  • Create a professional presence on the internet by 
    1. reflecting on the cultural and legal appropriateness of your current social presence 
    2. creating a LinkedIn profile presenting your professional abilities and aspirations
