Leadership program update
Charles Sturt University’s Internal Capability Strategy is currently being reviewed to plan and introduce leadership development opportunities at all levels.
To assist in the planning process our current leadership courses have been placed on hold for 2020. The planning and development of the Essential Leadership and Management Fundamentals programs is underway and will take place in consultation with Divisions and Portfolios for proposed release in 2021.
We will keep you updated as we progress.
Students Enrolling for Year 2 of the GCULM
There are no changes for the current GCULM cohort undertaking the two-year program, and 2019-2020 students are reminded to enrol in the related subjects for Year 2.
About the GCULM
The Graduate Certificate in University and Leadership Management aims to enhance the capacity of employees to undertake leadership and management roles and responsibilities at Charles Sturt University.
The course is suitable for staff members who have the opportunity to lead or manage people, programs or projects. Staff who successfully complete the GCULM program will receive a nationally recognised certificate. The GCULM is a pathway into a number of masters courses within the Faculty of Business.
Participants complete 4 subjects over 2 years studying as part of a supervised and supported cohort with other staff members. You will cover contemporary theoretical and practical approaches to business, and learn the key communication skills needed to lead change in uncertain and dynamic university environments.
ULM502 - Leadership perspectives and processes
This work-focused subject aims to build self-aware and reflective practitioners. It examines leadership and leadership practice in the context of higher education and in alignment with CSU's strategic plan.
Leadership is conceptualised not as something held by an individual but as a set of social practices that arises from relationships and conditions of work. You'll be encouraged to re-frame your understanding of leading and managing at CSU. You'll begin to articulate your own leadership values and philosophy by exploring different representations and theories of leadership.
ULM503 - The higher education environment and university governance
This subject examines and builds an understanding and appreciation of contemporary governance theory and practice within the Australian and higher education context. The subject also explores the roles and responsibilities of university governance mechanisms.
Particular attention is given to the participant's leadership role in university governance and the implications for ethical and financially sustainable practice within a highly politicised tertiary environment.
ULM504 - Strategic thinking, analysis and action
This subject builds understanding and appreciation of effective university strategic leadership and management, within both the external and CSU context. Participants will develop knowledge and skills in the areas of strategic analysis, strategic choice and strategic implementation.
Particular attention is given to participants' leadership role in sharing knowledge and leading others to develop and implement strategy and practise sustainability for longer-term organisational outcomes. All this must be done in the context of resource restraints and a highly politicised tertiary environment.
ULM505 - Leadership through change
This work-focused subject builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding of leadership theory and practice developed in the GCULM course. It aims to build participants' capability to critically analyse organisational capability and dynamics, and lead others to embed sustainable change at CSU.
