Set roster employees
If you work on a set roster, you should understand the hours, shifts and penalties related to this work arrangement.
Ordinary hours and days of work
The ordinary hours of duty for an employee on a set roster:
- are a maximum of 10 hours per day
- span from 6.00am –10.00pm
- can take place from Monday to Sunday (inclusive).
You should go no more than five hours without a meal break. Meal breaks are a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes.
You're also entitled to morning and afternoon tea breaks, at a maximum of 10 minutes each.
Rostered days off
If you're a set roster employee and exceed your ordinary working hours, the excess time will accumulate. You may accumulate enough time to take at least one rostered day off (RDO) per month. You accrue time towards RDOs at the ordinary rate, except on weekends and public holidays.
Changes to your roster
Your roster can be altered at any time by mutual agreement, or by the University with one week’s notice.
Between Monday and Friday you will receive a 15% loading for all hours worked:
- before 6.00am
- after 7.00pm.
Weekends and public holidays
You should not work more than 70 ordinary hours on weekends and public holidays each year, except by mutual agreement. The following loadings apply:
- 50% for all hours worked on a Saturday
- 100% for all hours worked on a Sunday
- 150% for all hours worked on a public holiday.
The maximum time between split shifts is 6 hours.
We may require you to work a reasonable amount of overtime, taking into consideration your family responsibilities. A rest period of 10 hours is required between overtime and the following shift.
Payment of overtime:
- must be authorised in advance
- is not payable for work less than 15 minutes.
Overtime applies to hours:
- in excess of your rostered hours for a particular day
- in excess of 140 hours over a 4 week period
- on a day you're not rostered to work.
If you exceed your usual work hours on an ordinary work day, all your excess time will be paid as overtime. If you work on a day you're not usually required, you'll be paid a minimum of three hours overtime.
You'll be paid at the rate of time and one half for:
- the first two hours in excess of your rostered hours for a particular day (Monday to Friday, other than a public holiday)
- all overtime worked on a Saturday.
You'll be paid at the rate of double time for:
- all hours in excess of 10 per day
- all overtime in excess of two hours Monday to Friday (other than a public holiday)
- all overtime worked on a Sunday.
You'll be paid at the rate of double time and one half for:
- all overtime worked on a public holiday.
Casual staff may work up to 10 hours on any day before overtime is paid.
Overtime meal breaks and allowances
Where you've worked more than four hours of overtime, you're entitled to a 20 minute paid meal break. A meal allowance also applies where you:
- start work before 6.00am and at least 1 hour before your normal starting time
- finish work after 7.00pm and at least 1 hour after your normal finishing time.
In the event of any discrepancy between this website and the Enterprise Agreement or relevant Policy/Procedure/Guidelines, the terms of the Agreement or Policy/Procedure/Guidelines will prevail.
