Adjunct appointments

Adjunct staff are people who:

  • are not employees of Charles Sturt but who have been recognised for their contribution to the teaching, research, scholarship, creative work or management of the University;
  • are employed by Charles Sturt's partners in Australia and abroad, and who participate in the teaching of subjects and courses leading to Charles Sturt awards; or
  • have resigned or retired from the staff of Charles Sturt.

Terms of appointment

  • Adjunct appointments are normally up to 5 years in duration.
  • An adjunct appointment may be renewed by mutual agreement.
  • Adjunct appointments do not attract a salary of any kind from the University.
  • An adjunct staff member may hold a concurrent casual academic appointment.
  • An adjunct appointment should not be used to allow ongoing systems access for casual academic (sessional) staff.

Appointing an adjunct staff member

  1. Obtain a full CV from the potential staff member.
  2. Complete the appropriate form:
  3. Submit the form and CV electronically to the delegated officer(s) for approval.
  4. The delegated officer is to forward the approved form and CV to
  5. HR will issue the offer of appointment.
  6. A staff number will be allocated and privileges activated following acceptance of the offer.

Extending an appointment

If you only want to change the appointment dates, then you can do this in Web Kiosk.

If you need to make other changes to the appointment, then you will need to complete new appointment forms.

Terminating an appointment

If an adjunct appointment is to be terminated for any reason, the delegated officer must email with the details.

Notional appointment fraction

To determine the notional appointment fraction, you need to estimate what percentage of time the appointee will be performing their duties for CSU and if applicable, contributing to the research profile of their discipline and school, whether they are present on campus or not.

This is important as the information is used when fulfilling our reporting requirements for Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) and Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE).

Orientation and induction

Orientation and induction are important for visiting and adjunct staff. They require an understanding of:

  • Charles Sturt's performance requirements
  • relevant compliance and legislative requirements that may apply
  • Charles Sturt's expectations.

Each Faculty and Division will determine individual programs that take into account the nature of the work being undertaken.

There are resources available at Managing @ CSU which outline the steps to be taken to induct a staff member into the University.

Responsibilities of faculties and divisions

Each Faculty or Division is responsible for developing a strategy and resources regarding the orientation and induction of visiting and adjunct staff.

This could include information relating to:

  • Compliance and ethical requirements for visiting and adjunct staff
  • Access to Charles Sturt  IT network
  • Access to and use of Charles Sturt Facilities
  • University Council and Academic Senate regulations relating to the role and activities of the appointment.

The Appointments Procedure – Visiting and Adjunct Appointments states that the following items remain the responsibility of the Executive Dean of Faculty (or nominee) and/or the Director of a Research Centre (or nominee) in conjunction with the Division of People and Culture:

  • The provision of a general induction to the University.
  • The dissemination of information related to Environment, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity and the Academic Code of Conduct.

Visiting staff are expected to complete the University's online orientation module in ELMO.
