CSU uses criterion-referenced standards-based assessment (CRSBA). This means students' achievements are assessed against pre-defined criteria and standards of performance, not ranked against each other, making assessment more transparent. It also improves communication with students as they know what we will be looking for when we mark their assessments and can make informed judgements as to what to focus on and what to submit.
Student feedback on CRSBA has shown that they value the detail and guidance that is communicated via marking criteria and standards, while Schools have indicated that CRSBA has improved our focus on constructively aligning teaching, learning activities and assessments with the subject learning outcomes. Taking a team approach to developing and moderating assessment also enhances our collegiality and provides a more complete perspective of assessment processes throughout the progression of a course.
