ACT312 Contemporary Performance (8)

This subject introduces students to contemporary performance practices from a theoretical and practical perspective. The subject uses a thematic approach to analyse performance concepts including: postmodern performance, the body as text, post-dramatic theatre and the space and place of performance. Students engage in critical discussion and reflection about the work of leading practitioners and apply their understanding of concepts by creating their own thematic mediated performance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and explore theories and practices of contemporary performance;
  • be able to analyse the performance methods of leading practitioners;
  • be able to apply theories of performance to creative practice using mediated forms; and
  • be able to research and facilitate seminars in contemporary performance.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Radical concepts: Influences and concepts of performance
  • Body Works: An examination of the body as text in physical theatre
  • Hybrid performances: Post dramatic approaches to text
  • Spaces of Engagement: An exploration of festival, online and site-specific performance
  • Creating a mediated performance
