AHT423 Digital Agriculture in Practice (8)

Digital disruption to Agricultural practice is causing transformative change in some sectors of the Industry. In this subject students examine the range of current applications of digital technology to Agriculture globally and its likely impact in the future. The aim of this subject is to provide students with the opportunity to apply their new-found skills in global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing, information technology and database management to a case study in agriculture.

Enrolment Restrictions

This subject is restricted to students enrolled in Bachelor of Agriculture, Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours), Master of Sustainable Agriculture Articulated Set and Master of Agricultural Business Management Articulated Set.

Students undertaking cross-institutional study can apply for approval from the Course Director.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the range of digital agriculture applications occurring globally in agriculture and debate their productive, environmental, social and human impact on agricultural systems;
  • be able to appraise the appropriateness of key digital tools to current farm systems;
  • be able to integrate knowledge and apply skills in digital technology to an agricultural situation and reflect on the outcomes;
  • be able to develop and implement a strategy for project delivery; and
  • be able to articulate digital citizenship in professional practice.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Digital disruption in Agriculture
  • Digital tools and their application with respect to: i) data collection; ii) interpretation; iii) simulation; iv) prediction; v) decision-making; and vi) communication
  • Digital citizenship
  • Professional practice and future skills in digital agriculture

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

The 3 day residential school will provide the opportunity to immerse students in a community of practice by introducing them to people working in this field in agriculture.  It will also be an opportunity for students to be supported in the development of their case study.  Students will also showcase their developing case-studies and receive feedback and support prior to submission.

Travel to and accommodation at a CSU campus may be required for online students attending the compulsory residential school.
