BMS255 Neuroscience for Health Practice (8)

This subject provides students with an understanding of fundamental neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Students will develop an understanding of the sensory, motor and autonomic nervous systems, as well as the vascularisation of the central nervous system. Higher cortical function and dysfunction are also covered. Students will apply their fundamental understanding of neuroscience to investigate the major functional categories of neurological disease, examples of common neurological disorders, and the major classes of pharmaceuticals used to modulate nervous system activity.

Assumed Knowledge

A fundamental understanding of basic chemistry, cell physiology, and muscle physiology is assumed knowledge. In particular, students will need to be familiar with electrolytes and their movement across cell membranes to generate action potentials.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the parts and the function of the peripheral and central nervous systems
  • be able to apply knowledge of the peripheral and central nervous systems to interpret clinical findings
  • be able to determine appropriate diagnostic tests to identify neurological function / dysfunction
  • be able to explain the pharmacological basis of the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease in relation to neurological structure and function
