In this subject, students will explore assessment practices in primary school and early childhood settings and critically discuss the purposes, methods, strengths and challenges of assessing learning. Students will become familiar with the grading systems commonly used in primary school settings in Australia. They will develop a critical awareness of the usefulness of different approaches for recording children's learning for planning purposes, and to reflect on teacher professional practice to improve student learning outcomes. This subject examines skills and practices required for effective assessment and reporting in early childhood and primary settings.

They will plan sequences of learning based on observation and assessment of children's abilities. Planning will include catering for differentiation, the use of formative and summative assessment strategies to guide planning for teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on practice to guide planning for improved learning outcomes.
