EHR221 Exercise for Health and Fitness (8)

Health and wellness are enhanced through participation in regular physical activity and improved fitness. In this subject, students will develop their capacity to plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programs to achieve fundamental health and fitness outcomes. Students will examine concepts of health and wellness, define and distinguish between physical activity and exercise, and explore the health-related components of fitness. Communication with clients, collaborative goals, health screening and risk appraisals are key areas of study. Students will develop practical skills for fitness assessments and exercise instruction for both individuals and groups.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss the influence of physical activity and fitness on dimensions of health, wellness, and quality of life;
  • be able to perform pre-screening and consultations to establish client risk for exercise prescription, goals and needs;
  • be able to select and implement suitable exercise assessments to appraise targeted components of fitness;
  • be able to use a variety of exercise modalities to design and deliver a short-term exercise program to achieve health and fitness outcomes;
  • be able to demonstrate a variety of physical conditioning activities with technical proficiency; and
  • be able to provide safe and effective instructions to clients when delivering individual and group exercise sessions.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

Online students are required to attend a three (3) day Residential School.  

The residential school develops students practical competency skills in exercise testing, delivery and instruction and the use of exercise testing and training equipment.This Residential School complies with requirements to meet ESSA accreditation.  

Special Resources

Online students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
